From Paris to Paradise... We arrive in Calvi, Corsica

Tuesday October 1 was a travel day.  Our Paris host, Daniel, met us at the apartment at 9:00 a.m. and helped carry the luggage down to the street.  We took the #4 Métro line to Châtelet, and then transferred to the #14 line which now goes to Orly Airport.  The line was extended for the Olympics.

Arriving at Orly Airport

Quiet Tuesday near our departure lounge

Our flight left about 15 minutes late, but we made up time in the air and the flight was only 1 hour and 15 minutes.  We landed at 1:45 p.m. at the Calvi airport.  As we were landing, the pilot noted that "the weather was awesome" and that it was 25C!

We took a taxi to our Airbnb, where we were met by our host Julia.  She has lived in Calvi since she was 4 years old.  She greeted us with "Welcome to Paradise".  We are staying in a newly built low rise apartment building.  We are on the second floor and there is an elevator.  We are two minutes from the beach and only about 10 minutes from a large supermarket, the tourist office, and the train station.  A bit further is the old town and then there is a climb to the famous Calvi citadel.

Julia left us some Corsican treats and a bottle of wine.   It is a very well equipped kitchen with a toaster, kettle, microwave, Nepresso coffee maker, and a large cooktop and oven.  There is a two piece bathroom and a small laundry room.

Treats for us- a bottle of white wine (Corsican), a bar of Nougat, Corsican cookies and water.

View from our window-- mountains, flowers, blue sky

We decided to first visit the Tourism office and check the train schedule at the Train station before wandering in the old town.

First a look at the sandy beach-- definitely folks swimming and sun bathing

We picked up some brochures at the Tourist Office and then stopped at the Train station.  We need to head to our next stop Ajaccio on Saturday.  It turns out there are only two trains a day and the morning train leaves at 7:00 a.m.  Tickets can only be purchased on the day of travel- though the station opens at 6:00 a.m.  It is a five hour trip.   We were hoping for a better schedule, but the afternoon train doesn't leave until 4:30 p.m. and we only have two nights in Ajaccio, so it looks like an early morning for us.  We also inquired about a day trip to L'Île Rousse, a small town about an hour away by train.  Again tickets are only purchased the day of travel.  Luckily, there are more trains and convenient times to travel.

We decided to save the hike to the top to another day

We stopped at Sainte Marie Majeure Church which was built commencing in 1774.

We stopped at a lovely traiteur for some food for dinner.  Lovely charcuterie and some cooked zucchini beignets and other dessert beignets.  There are lots of Corsican specialties in all the stores.  Also lots of Corsican cheeses, including a number of sheep cheeses.

It was then time to pick out a waterfront café to have a drink.  We chose one that seemed busy but still had sun, as it was getting late in the afternoon.  It had also started to cool down.

We looked for a table near the water

Parfait---- we had "Cap Corse" Spritzess-- made with Corsican Cap Corse aperitif
(like Aperol, but a slightly different flavour from the Corsican landscape)

Definitely a change in scenery

View of the harbour and lovely cloud formations and the hills

We walked back to the apartment making a stop at the very large supermarket.  Alain's cold seems to be lingering, so we wanted to rest.   We had a charcuterie plate with the beignets, a green salad and some of the white wine left by our host.  A welcome weather change and definitely a slower pace than Paris.  Calvi only has a population of around 5700 though it is clearly a tourist destination during the summer, with its beautiful sandy beach and blue waters.
